Open City Documentary Festival
Branding, Identity & Print Design
Open City Documentary Festival is the one of the UK's biggest annual film festivals, dedicated solely to the art of documentary film making. Founded in 2010 the festival houses events in open spaces, cinema’s and galleries around London and had already built a strong following. Having outgrown their original identity design, OCDF asked us to help develop a new identity that would allow for future growth and at the same time apply the design to their upcoming event.
We approached the identity design around the same concept as the festival, using open space to form a community. The new identity reflects the festival's young and modern atmosphere, using simple graphic devices, bold typography and carefully curated imagery to provide a fresh image for the festival to thrive on. To help showcase the 2015 event we created a range of promotional materials including a 20 page newspaper, 60 page brochure, posters, flyers, banners, tote bags, badges, stickers, signage and way-finding. With the new identity and approach, the festival was well received by new and existing audiences. The identity still holds strong in 2020 and the festival grows year on year.
Grid based designs are influenced by the concept of open space and community; the identity reflects the festival’s dynamic atmosphere.
